What Grandma Knew

Picture
Grandma knew which herbs to use when one of us took sick, or had a minor
injury or health problem. In the not-so-distant past most families used home
remedies to control small medical emergencies and to prevent minor ailments from
developing into serious problems. . But much of that common knowledge is no
longer so common. Unfortunately, today the majority of families have
relinquished their memories of home first-aid. Old health concepts based on
simple and useful observations have vanished, and Grandma’s home remedies are
largely forgotten. It is not so easy to wade through the jumble of information
on herbs and their applications to common ailments. Here I hope to unravel some
of the confusion by presenting the historical uses of many herbs, and attempt to
relearn WHAT GRANDMA KNEW.

Fresh herbs are wonderful for cooking and medicinal purposes, But some herbs may be harder to grow, or more exotic, or just out of season. When that is the case I recommend Mountain Rose Herbs as the next best thing to growing them yourself.  KNOW THE SOURCE OF YOUR HERBS ! Many herbs can be found growing wild, and I encourage everyone to learn what they look like and harvest them, because the fresh, live herb is almost always superior medicine, and often good food to boot. But do not harvest wild herbs unless you know for sure that they have not been sprayed with any kind of pesticides or herbicides. This is true also of the herbs you buy. KNOW YOUR SOURCE ! If you get herbs that have not been organically grown, you may be taking unknown toxins into your body. These pesticides and herbicides, which are used by many commercial herb growers, not only negate the beneficial effects of the herbs, but actually do harm. This applies to how the herbs are grown, harvested, processed and handled. Mountain Rose Herbs know their sources. They go to great lengths to ensure the quality and purity of all the herbs they sell. You can find out all about their extensive testing practices and organic certification and many more reasons I think they are the greatest company on earth on my Mountain Rose Herbs Page. Decide for yourself.

To all of you wonderful people who have left encouraging comments and
questions:   I need to address the issue of direct health questions. Many of you
have left comments or sent e-mails asking what herb I would recommend for one
issue or another. I’m sorry I’ve not answered these all individually. There are
a couple of reasons for this. One – this I started this site as just a hobby, a way to
share what I have learned. the sheer volume of e-mail has been a little
overwhelming, and touching, but it's hard to answer them all at times. The second
reason is legal. The laws governing this kind of information are very strict,
and say that I cannot diagnose or prescribe in any way. Please see my
disclaimer.  That’s why I have tried to showcase this information in a
historical context. If there is an issue I have not addressed on my  “common
problems”
page, please leave a comment here, or drop me an e-mail at
whatgrandmaknew@yahoo.com    thank you all for your understanding, and keep
those suggestions coming, I’ll do my best.
